Charging the DCX battery — grid, solar, and generator
Charging from shore power (grid)
- Ensure the DCX Power System is turned on.
- Set the external incoming RCD or supply to the OFF position and plug in the 240VAC 15A supply lead.
- Set the incoming RCD to ON.
- Verify the DCX battery is charging — the BMS screen should show a negative amp value (typically -20 to -30A) with the current flow arrow pointing towards the battery.
When charging from the grid, if the combined inverter charging current and appliance load within the van exceeds 15A at 230VAC, the Grid Overcurrent Transfer Switch will activate overcurrent protection. The inverter will then supply power from the battery for 180 seconds. After 180 seconds, the transfer switch will attempt to draw from the grid again until 15A is next exceeded or power is removed.
Charging from solar
The DCX battery charges from grid and solar simultaneously. Solar charging current depends on panel array size and atmospheric conditions. To enable solar charging, ensure the DC Breaker on the DCX Power System is in the ON position and the roof isolator is switched ON.
Solar provides power to loads first. Any surplus solar power not used by appliances is used to charge the battery.
Charging from a generator
Generator minimum requirement: 2.2 KVA pure sine wave inverter generator. Higher capacity generators (3 KVA or above) are acceptable and preferred — they extend generator lifespan and improve charging efficiency. Connect the generator to the 240VAC 15A shore power socket on the DCX unit. Start the generator and allow it to stabilise before enabling the Main Switch Grid Supply.
Charging via DC-DC charger (driving)
The DCX Power System accepts DC-DC charging through the blue SB50 External Charge port. Press the EXT CHARGE button on the top panel to enable (green LED will illuminate). The DC-DC charger must be an OzX Corp approved isolated unit with Li-ion CC/CV charging profile, maximum charge current 50A, and float voltage 58.0VDC.
Expected charge times
14.3kWh battery from empty: approximately 13 to 14 hours from grid power overnight. This is accelerated when charging simultaneously from solar during the day. 7.1kWh battery from empty: approximately 6 to 7 hours from grid power.
